They force a battery (used for winter storeage) to continue to cycle through numerous charge / discharge cycles.The problem with the 'booster packs' is that they are usually abused to the limit.

You might only have one or two bad cells dragging the pack down, but trying to identify it and replace a bad cell might be more trouble than it is worth. Nickel batteries were discouraged because of the thermal runaway issue when drawing large amounts of current.

Also nickel batteries were prone to shorting out when kept charged all the time. The way to store a nickel battery is to discharge it completely. Lead acid or gel cells deteriorate when discharged, thats why we use them in a car where it is always fully charged. These types of batteries go bad when discharged and left that way. Every time you discharge a lead battery all the way it consumes 10% of it's service life.

A gell battery (a battery is a group of cells) is just a lead acid battery with gelled electrolyte.

The old one has served its time, i highly recommend these things, they will pay for themselves many times over. I don't think we have a 'battery boys' around here, though we may have an equivalent.Usually around here I get the same response to things like this as I would asking for the local honda shop to work on my bike, it'd be cheaper to buy a new one.
