I went to one of our local gun shows today and found an interesting Colt SAA that a friend of mine was selling. It is a first generation Colt, originally in.45 Colt and was later coverted to.38 Special, with a 5 1/2 inch barrel. The grips are some sort of yellowed plastic, not ivory but not the cheap plastic either, they look like they yellowed with age and not something that was aged beforehand. The action is very nice and the owner has shot it strictly with standard.38 Special ammo, no hot stuff. It shoots quite well. I have bought many guns from him and can tell you he knows his guns and his favorites are Colt SAA's.

Double

The gun has a letter from Colt that says it was shipped on December 30, 1876 with 49 other guns to a store named Moore's in NYC. The finish on the gun was blued, it is worn it was never reblued before the conversion. The barrel of course is darker than the rest of the gun.

Other than the barrel, the loading gate does not number up with the frame but the rest all match. Is it worth $800 in the condition like that? A gun that early that is rechambered and NOT refinished and overbuffed is very expensive. If it was on Gunbroker for $1800, based on your description, someone would bid on it fast. I've followed a couple later pre-war Colts changed to.38 special recently and they have gone for close to that.

First Cartridge Conversion Revolver

This gun is a prize because someone would want to make it a.45 again and then own a very early Colt SAA that's worth a ton. Beware that early frame, though.

I think the early guns were made of iron and are considered weaker than later black powder era guns made before 1900. Does the frame still have the (remnants) of the original case hardening finish?

Clock reset code pokemon crystal. Even if only gray or silvered out looking now.The trigger guard and backstrap would have been a bright high polished blue originally. The gate # is an assembly number as pointed out already. It will match an identicle number stamped on the frame but covered by the trigger guard or backstrap assembly. So disassembly of those parts is necessary to see if the gate and frame are original parts that were fitted and polished as a unit. That was done during the mgf process early before the ser#'s were applied to the partsThe hammer should have the cone shaped firing pin w/ coarse hand checkered spur. IIRC the checkering should be the longer pattern, but not positive. So many things to check for originality. It's a 3rd yr production SAA if the date is right.
